There are three popular methods of filtration – Sand, Cartridge, and Diatomaceous Earth (D.E).
Sand
In this method, impurities are extracted from the water utilizing sand to collect and attract the debris. Sand filters must be backwashed (running it in reverse) to unload the water waste. This is a manual process that must be performed every few weeks. Sand filters trap debris as small as 20 to 40 microns.
Cartridge
Cartridge filters have a greater surface area than sand allowing for fewer clogs and easier maintenance. Cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than sand which puts less backpressure on the pump, providing more flow and turnover. Cartridge filters should be cleaned once or twice a season by simply hosing them off. Cartridge element filters trap debris as small as 10 to 15 microns.
DE
Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. They are used to coat "grids" in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves allowing for the removal of debris as small as 5 microns. Once the pressure rises, the filter is backwashed just like a sand filter and then "recharged" with more DE powder. DE filters trap debris as small as 2 - 5 microns.

This in ground swimming pool diving board is resting on a Flyte Deck II stand and is intended for light to moderate duty use on residential pools. The DuraBeam Diving Board has a durable acrylic outer body (skin), a non-slip, sanded tread and is pre-drilled with two holes for ease in installation. With hand-laid fiberglass and resin roving over twin laminated wood runners acting as the board's skeletal frame, the DuraBeam Diving Board will provide years of fun and safety on residential pools.

Jandy Deck Jets create shimmering arcs of water from your deck into your pool or spa. The jets can be installed in almost any combination and since they can be adjusted 360°, the dazzling effects they create can be changed again and again to meet your mood.
The Deck Jets come with polished bronze deck coverplates giving the deck a rich finish.
Water bubblers / Price: $370 per
Water bubblers are a fun way to add movement and atmosphere to your pool while actually serving a purpose. Bubblers assist in moving pool water within the pool and assists in eliminating stagnant water which is a breeding ground for algae. Strategically placing bubblers on large steps, benches, and tanning decks also helps keep trash or dirt from settling on higher surfaces that our in-ground cleaners can't reach.
The mood that bubblers creates with the tropical sound of water continuously moving is the perfect additional to a backyard.
Safety covers / Price: Starting at $1,500 (depending on size)
Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children 1-14 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and an extensive study performed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that "75 percent of the children involved in swimming pool submersion or drowning accidents were between 1 and 3 years old."
Safety pool covers are designed for long-term use, such as when closing a pool for winter. Mesh safety pool covers require little maintenance because debris that lands on them blows off the top, and rain and snow drain through the mesh panels. And because puddles cannot accumulate on the surface, having a mesh-style safety pool cover eliminates the risk of toddlers or pets unexpectedly coming in contact with shallow water.
